The success of WALLBOX and CTTC-UPC in the COLDPOST Project: Development of an Innovative Public Charger for Electric Vehicles

Call for INNOTEC 2021 Grants: Industrial research and experimental development projects

WALLBOX, in collaboration with the Heat Transfer Technology Center (CTTC) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), has completed the joint project “COLDPOST”, supported by ACCIÓ within the framework of the INNOTEC 2021 Call for Grants: Industrial research and experimental development projects.

The project’s goal was to set new standards for cooling public chargers for electric vehicles. The results demonstrate the robustness of the new system, keeping critical components at lower temperatures and reducing dirt buildup, which decreases the need for maintenance.

Tests show that a medium power charger can operate at full capacity even in extreme conditions up to 55°C, effectively protecting against dust and particles.

The project’s success has exceeded expectations, highlighting advances such as the identification of active cooling systems, the characterization of power modules, the design of the thermal system, and the understanding of the interaction between components.

With the financial support of ACCIÓ, with a total subsidy of €148,557.11, the project has met its objective. The results not only represent a technological advance in electric vehicle charging but also provide insights applicable to future WALLBOX public charger developments.
